Frequently asked questions
What government grants are available to Canadian businesses?
Programs fall into a few families: non-repayable grants and contributions, wage subsidies and training grants, refundable and non-refundable tax credits, and repayable or interest-free contributions. Eligibility depends on your sector, province, company size and the activity being funded.
Do government grants have to be repaid?
Non-repayable grants and contributions do not have to be repaid when the funded project is delivered and reported as agreed. Repayable contributions are repaid, often interest-free, on a schedule set in the funding agreement.
Can a business apply for more than one program?
Often yes. Many federal and provincial programs can be stacked, subject to each program’s stacking limit on total government assistance for the same costs. Sequencing matters, because assistance received can reduce the amount claimable under another program.
When should we apply for funding?
Most grants require approval before project costs are incurred, so the application should come before the spend. Tax credits such as SR&ED are claimed after the fiscal year end. Planning the calendar early keeps both routes open.
